Development of a Visual Odometry for Mobile Robots

In the "Field Robotics" group at Fraunhofer IPA in Stuttgart, we are an international research team passionate about developing holistic robotic systems for sustainable and future-proof agriculture in Europe. In doing so, we rely on advanced AI technology to improve food quality, protect our environment without economically disadvantaging farmers, and create sustainable pathways to regenerative and ecological agriculture.

A key technology in this context is robust and reliable navigation for autonomous driving of robots in open terrain. We offer you the opportunity to participate in this research in the field of localization by camera information.
Outdoor mobile robots often rely on (RTK) GPS information to localize themselves. However, GPS information can be easily interrupted and is error-prone (especially in urban canyons or near forests). Thus, the robot should be able to localize itself independently of (RTK) GPS using camera information. The goal of this work is therefore to develop a visual odometry (VO) algorithm that reliably localizes the robot in various outdoor environments with rough and uneven terrain as well as changing light and weather conditions

- Further development of computer vision algorithms for VO

- Evaluation and testing under real conditions on own test fields

- Profound knowledge of computer vision algorithms, especially convolutional neural networks
- Experience with deep learning frameworks such as Keras / TensorFlow / PyTorch preferred
- Experience in mobile robot localization using VO preferred
