ICBM is an internationally renowned research institute for basic and applied marine sciences. The institute's more than 20 research groups strive for a better understanding of the function of marine environmental systems through close cooperation between different scientific disciplines (chemistry, biology, physics, mathematical modelling).
The change in the global water cycle due to climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing society, as dry regions become drier and wet regions become wetter. The problem is that 85% of evaporation and 77% of precipitation occur over the oceans and the global water cycle is poorly understood due to difficult observational conditions over the oceans. The goal of the project FreshOcean is to gain a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics and changes in salinity and associated thermal fields at sea surfaces and the near-surface layer, and how they relate to evaporation processes. The focus is an expedition to the central Atlantic Ocean with its high surface salinity, i.e., evaporation rates exceed precipitation rates. During the expedition, an autonomous catamaran will be used, capable of collecting high-resolution sea surface data. Observations will be supported by measurements from buoys, ship-based measurements, and satellites. In addition, a comprehensive set of experiments will be conducted in a mesocosm facility at the University of Oldenburg, where the driving forces for evaporation can be controlled and a mechanistic understanding can be achieved.
**Your tasks**:
- Investigation of evaporation processes and their influence on temperature and salinity anomalies at ocean’s surface with focus on the Central Atlantic.
- Creation and maintenance of a database, including archiving, backup and publication.
- Operation and maintenance of sensors and their platforms
- Publication in international scientific journals
**Required qualifications**:
- Qualifying academic university degree (master or diploma) in the following fields: physical oceanography, hydrology or environmental sciences with a focus on physical processes
- Knowledge of data processing and analysis of large data sets, preferably in Matlab, R or Python.
- Willingness and aptitude to participate in multi-week seagoing expeditions.
- Good skills of the English language
**Ideally, you will bring**:
- Expertise in physical oceanography and experience with physical measurement techniques and/or radio controlled or autonomous platforms.
- experience in geostatistics
- social and intercultural competence, ability to work in a team
