The research group "Neurosensorics/Animal Navigation" headed by Prof. Henrik Mouritsen at the Institute of Biology and Environmental Sciences offers within the SFB 1372:
**PhD position **(M/F/d, 65% E13 TV-L Position, 3 Years)
**Investigating the Role of Cryptochrome 4 in Avian Navigation**

Our research group is dedicated to understanding the intricate mechanisms underlying animal navigation, with a specific emphasis on the role of Cryptochrome 4 in avian magnetoreception. By employing cutting-edge techniques and a multidisciplinary approach, we aim to understand magnetoreception from the biophysics of electron spins via molecular biology and neuroscience to the behavior of the animal. This position aims to elucidate the specific mechanisms by which Cryptochrome 4 contributes to magnetoreception in birds, employing state-of-the-art biochemical and molecular biology techniques to manipulate and analyze Cryptochrome 4 at the protein level.

**Your Qualifications**
- Completed academic university degree (Diploma (Uni) or Master)
- Proficiency in molecular biology techniques, including recombinational cloning, primer design, PCR, site-directed mutagenesis, DNA gel electrophoresis, and sequencing.
- Expertise in biochemistry techniques, including recombinant protein expression and purification using IMAC and Ion Exchange Chromatography.
- Minimum of one year of experience in expression and purification of avian Cryptochrome 4 in E. coli.
- Proficient in operating AKTA purification systems and associated software, with at least one year of hands-on experience.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.

Preferable
- Experience in protein characterization including various protein assay analysis, SDS-PAGE, Western blot analysis, immunohistochemistry, and UV-Vis spectroscopy.
- Enthusiasm for interdisciplinary research and integrating different scientific disciplines to address complex biological questions.
- Excellent communication, critical thinking, and creativity.
