Head of Accounting

Position Summary:

The Head of accounting is responsible for the overall accounting of the company's Marburg site and ensures that the site's accounting procedures comply with generally accepted accounting principles as well as specific local accounting regulations. He/she is also responsible for directing and coordinating the company's financial planning and budget management. The position plays a key role in assisting management in making decisions on all accounting and finance related matters, and reports directly to the Managing Director in Marburg, and VP, Finance at the corporate level.


Responsibilities:


-Management:

  • Overseeing the accounting staff as well as all outsourced activities.
  • Maintaining a system of accounting policies and procedures.
  • Providing advice and decision support to the VP, Finance at corporate level and Managing Director onsite.
  • Working with management to identify opportunities to improve the company's financial position: e.g. pricing, cost reduction, cash and working capital management, additional controls and measures to safeguard and protect the company's assets.

-Transactions:

  • Closing the books in Sage on a monthly, quarterly and annual basis.
  • Responsibility for the proper processing of all types of business transactions, including supplier invoices, customer billing, payroll and cash receipts and disbursements.
  • Timely payment of invoices and prompt collection of receivables.
  • Regular reconciliation of bank accounts.
  • Maintaining a chart of accounts that meets the company's accounting requirements.
  • Intercompany transactions and reconciliation of payments and receipts.
  • Maintaining an organized filing system for all paper-based accounting records, including a system for archiving and destroying documents.
  • Maintaining a comprehensive control system for all accounting functions.

- Compliance:

  • Compliance with all filing requirements imposed by local or federal authorities.
  • Compliance with all tax reporting and payment obligations.

- Reporting

  • Preparation and timely issuance of accurate financial statements.
  • Assisting in the preparation of the company's annual report.
  • Preparation of various financial reports and analyses for the management.
  • Provide information required by external auditors for the audit of the company's financial statements and accounting system.


Qualifications:

  • Certified accountant or university degree in accounting and finance.
  • Master's degree in accounting and finance preferred.
  • 5 to 10 years of relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in financial management and accounting principles through certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA) or Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA).
  • Proficiency in financial software and tools, including ERP systems, Excel and financial modelling.
  • Knowledge of German accounting standards (HGB) and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).
  • Fluent written and oral command of German and English.
  • Knowledge of the Sage accounting system is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Office and Excel in particular.
