  • As the headquarters of the state-wide competence center "Computational Chemistry and Quantum Sciences", kiz operates the JUSTUS 2 research cluster in Ulm, which is available to all scientists in these fields throughout the state. The bwHPC-S5 Phase 3 project, funded by the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK), aims to continue the state-wide concepts for High Performance Computing (HPC), Data Intensive Computing (DIC) and Large Scale Scientific Data Management (LS2DM) and thus to consolidate the integrated state-wide research infrastructure with first-class support for the scientific working groups.

Your profile

  • University degree (Diploma or Master's degree) in a scientific or technical field, preferably in physics, chemistry, mathematics or computer science
  • Very good knowledge of the Linux operating system including shell scripting
  • in-depth knowledge of performance analysis and optimization of scientific applications in HPC environments, combined with very good programming skills in Fortran or C/C++ and the use of OpenMP and MPI
  • Understanding of the system, network and/or storage technologies used in cluster computing, e.g. batch systems, high-speed interconnect, parallel file systems
  • Structured and goal-oriented way of working, high social competence
  • Very good written and spoken German and English skills

Your tasks

  • Supporting the scientists in the installation or porting of applications and in the migration of subject-specific research projects to the HPC research cluster at the operator site in Ulm, also in the area of user-specific data management
  • Collaboration in the continuous further development of HPC and data services and their infrastructure
  • Analysis of system usage to ensure smooth operation and identify optimization potential in the execution of invoices and data management
  • Carrying out performance analyses to optimize the scientific software packages used by the research groups, for example by adapting existing program codes (e.g. single-core optimizations, parallelization of sequential program parts using OpenMP and MPI, integration of performance-optimized numerical and/or data libraries)
  • Advice on the resource- and energy-efficient use of available systems
  • Development of learning materials and further documentation as well as regular participation in workshops and training courses for members of the state universities
