Your Mission

As R&D Manager, you will be responsible for the R&D of Koa ingredient range and optimal applications of these ingredients in final products. Working closely with our Development team, you will take a market-centric approach to ensure that Koa’s ingredients meet the technical and functional requirements of our B2B customers. You will also employ your food knowledge to contribute to the development of successful consumer applications utilising Koa ingredients. In this position, the R&D Manager conducts trials, analyses data, and collaborates with various stakeholders to enhance the practical implementation of our ingredients. Engineering new production processes and providing support on the implementation of our ingredients on existing production lines is another important aspect of this job.

Your key responsibilities will be:

Ingredient Research & Development

  • Plan, execute, and manage research projects that optimises Koa’s existing ingredient portfolio to enhance their functionality, cost-effectiveness, and impact on finished consumer products
  • Structure, plan, and conduct research and development to bring new cocoa fruit ingredient to market, while maintaining focus on developing commercially viable products for consumers
Application & Product Development
  • Responsible for managing Koa’s R&D and product development processes
  • Deep dive into the understanding of functional properties of various cocoa fruit components and how these functionalities can be harnessed in different applications
  • In collaboration with the Sales and development teams, set up, prepare, execute, and evaluate prototype and production (where relevant) trials
  • Conduct sensory evaluations for new and existing products to ensure quality and consistency
Knowledge Management & Technical Oversight
  • Assume a critical role in translating research into knowledge and insights, with responsibility for capturing and disseminating R&D knowledge within the team
  • Document ingredient development processes and, in collaboration with Quality, maintain ingredient specifications and create technical reports
  • Proactively maintain the latest knowledge of the latest trends, innovations, and regulations relevant to the cocoa fruit and cocoa fruit products industry
  • Leverage your knowledge of food processing techniques to develop optimal methods for extracting, modifying, and incorporating cocoa fruit ingredients into finished products and advise sales and our customers in their product development process
Your profile

  • You are outgoing, interactive, and love to work at the intersection between science, products, and people
  • You are fascinated by the depth and possibilities of food science and chemistry and love to experiment how this can be translated into ingredients and products that consumers love  
  • You have a Bachelor’s or Master's degree in Food Science, Food Technology, or a related field
  • You have at least 3 years of experience in research and development and/or product development in the food & beverage sector, preferably with exposure to customer-facing projects and project management
  • You are self-driven, motivated, persistent, and resilient, with an ambitious get $%@& done mindset
  • You are willing to travel and possess a valid driver’s licence
  • You manage all modern IT tools with ease and get excited about using the latest tech development
  • You are based in the greater Cologne Area or willing to relocate and have a valid residence permit in Germany or are in possession of a citizenship which is part of the Schengen Agreement
