Research Assistant (m/f/d) as team lead in quantum technologies focusing on ion-trap design (numerical simulations)

The research group of Prof. Dr. Christian Ospelkaus at the Institute of Quantum Optics develops components for scalable quantum computers based on trapped ions.
The Institute at the location in Hannover invites applications for the position of a Research Assistant (m/f/d) as team lead in quantum technologies focusing on ion-trap design (numerical simulations) (Salary Scale 14 TV-L, 100 %) at the earliest possible date or according to mutual agreement. The position is limited to three years with a possibility of extension.
Trapped ions are one of the most advanced platforms on the way towards fault-tolerant quantum computers. A core expertise of our group is the implementation of trapped-ion quantum logic gates using chip-integrated microwave circuitry rather than complex laser systems. This benefits both the fidelity of quantum gates and the scalability of the architecture. The key to this technology is the design of advanced processor layouts, which is the responsibility of the team lead. As a key contributor to the Quantum Valley Lower Saxony (QLVS) initiative, our group aims to build two quantum computer demonstrator setups to showcase the scaling potential of this technology.
We are part of an excellent research environment with access to a unique infrastructure including chip fabrication and characterization. The team is working in a national and international network and is participating in important large collaborative projects including the cluster of excellence “QuantumFrontiers“, the initiative “QVLS”, and the BMBF projects “MIQRO” and “ATIQ”.
Responsibilities and duties
Your main responsibility will be to lead a team designing and simulating ion trap chips for register-based quantum processors. On the one hand, you will supervise and support the PhD students and researchers in the team. You will also be an active contributor to the team's research projects. You will support the team in the development of designs for the manipulation of single ions with chip-integrated microwave circuitry as well as electrode layouts for the transport of ions between the individual registers of the ion trap chip. You will also contribute to a component library for efficient design of advanced ion trap chips.
