The Fraunhofer - Institute for Applied Optics and Precision Engineering IOF in Jena conducts applied research in the field of photonics and develops innovative optical systems to control light - from its generation and manipulation to its application. The services offered by the institute cover the entire photonic process chain ranging from opto-mechanical and opto-electronical system design to the manufacturing of customer-specific solutions and prototypes.
In the department "Optical and Mechanical System Design", we are looking for a scientific researcher with a focus on optical design.
Optical and mechanical system design is the theoretical basis for Fraunhofer IOF's broadband product portfolio. Optical systems based on classical and/or physical optics are developed, optimized and designed for production using different design and modeling tools. This includes simulations of opto-mechanical, thermal and thermo-optical effects as well as false and scattered light analysis. We cover applications ranging from replicated micro-optics for spectroscopic systems and miniaturized projection for the automotive industry up to high-performance optics for astronomy, earth observation and quantum communication.
What you will do
- Create and optimize optical designs, analyze their performance and tolerance
- Develop innovative concepts and solutions for a wide range of applications
- Cooperate closely with other specialized departments to establish production-oriented solutions
- Implement small software tools (scripts) to automate and link simulation sequences in commercial simulation applications
- Process and manage scientific projects independently
- Evaluate and interpret simulation results, prepare documentation and project reports
- Support project initiation and acquisition
- Represent the department at trade fairs and conferences
What you bring to the table
- Successfully completed scientific university degree (M. Sc. or diploma) in natural sciences, engineering sciences or mathematics or comparable qualification; preferably with a doctorate
- Experience in the simulation of optical systems, including tolerance calculation and scattered light simulation
- Experienced handling of one or more ray tracing software such as Zemax, Lighttools, FRED or CODEV
- Experience in one or more scripting languages such as Matlab, Python, Julia, etc.
- Ideally, experience in the simulation of wave-optical phenomena
- High degree of independence, reliability and creativity as well as a systematic way of working based on analytical and conceptual skills
- Ability to critically question and interpret simulation results; Deriving solution strategies based on sound knowledge of physical, mathematical or numerical relationships
- Friendly, communicative and open appearance
- Very good written and spoken German and English (at least B2)

The weekly working time is 39 hours. This position is also available on a part-time basis. The position is limited initially up to 2 years. We look for a long-term cooperation. Appointment, remuneration and social security benefits based on the public-sector collective wage agreement (TVöD). Additionally Fraunhofer may grant performance-based variable remuneration components.
