Your responsibilities
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue further academic qualifications outside of their work responsibilities.
The Cluster of Excellence "Quantum Universe" performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at the University of Hamburg and DESY.
Within the Dark Matter research area, we are pursuing several experimental approaches to search for light axions. The BRASS experiment is a broad-band search experiment that will achieve world-leading sensitivity in the next funded phase which will be an integral part of the new research infra-structure HAFUN (Hamburg Fundamental Interaction Laboratory). The existing path-finder experiment BRASS-p is operational and is used to establish key technologies required for the next phase. We are also engaged in narrow-band experiments using newly developed haloscopes which are used to explore temporal signatures of axionic Dark Matter or anti-quark nuggets. We are expecting the successful candidate to take responsibility to extend the BRASS-p setup and contribute to the related experimental activities including oversight and coordination of the ongoing lab activities.
Postdoctoral research associates will become members of the Quantum Universe Research School (QURS), which provides academic and key skills training, as well as career planning support. In addition, they will receive individual budgets to facilitate the attendance of summer schools and conferences, and to support other educational measures. Additional travel money for project-specific duties will be provided by the hosting research groups. Postdoctoral research associates may participate in the supervision of doctoral researchers, teaching at the University, and in the organization of the Cluster via an early career council.
Your profile
A university degree in a relevant field.
Research experience equivalent to a PhD.
We are looking for candidates with a strong experimental background with substantial experience in microwave-technology with an emphasis on low-background detection (e.g., haloscope experiments or instrumentation for radio telescopes). The candidate should be familiar with key aspects of analogue signal processing, relevant cryo- and vacuum technology. Additional experience and a track-record in searches for light axion dark matter are very useful. Prior experience in the coordination and organisation of lab activities are welcome.
