Your team
You will be part of the Monetary and Economic Statistics Division (MOE) in the Directorate General Statistics (DG-S). Our Division develops, compiles and disseminates statistics and statistical indicators. It also provides related user services regarding monetary financial institutions, other financial corporations, financial stability and financial integration within the euro area and the EU, as well as general economic statistics, including prices and costs, and surveys on non-financial sectors.
You will work in the Financial Statistics Section, which is responsible for compiling statistics and indicators on payment statistics, various types of financial stability related statistics, and indicators on financial integration and financial structures, supporting the ECB and the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB) in the conduct of their tasks.
In your role as Economist-Statistician, you will work closely with users of statistics in various ECB business areas, the ESRB and beyond. You will also work closely with other teams in the Directorate General Statistics, as well as statisticians in national central banks.
The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.
Your role
As an Economist-Statistician you will:
- Contribute to the quarterly production of the consolidated banking data (CBD) and the annual production of banking structural statistical indicators (SSI). You will also help analyse country level trends, conduct outlier detection and engage with national central bank counterparts for both datasets.
- Assume a leading role in the maintenance of the Python-based system used for the production of CBD and SSI, especially at the intersection of business requirements and IT system solutions. You will proactively engage with all relevant stakeholders and play a leading role in the future development and automation of business processes within the system.
- Contribute to the micro-to-macro compilation of CBD statistics based on entity-level COREP/ FINREP supervisory data as well as master data, and serve as a contact point for experts from national central banks.
- Contribute to the conceptual development of the statistical contents of both CBD and SSI to keep the statistics fit for purpose and capture relevant trends in fields such as digitalisation, environmental, social and governance (ESG) and liquidity risks.
- Represent the division in meetings of the Analysis Working Group (AWG) of the European Systemic Risk Board (ESRB). Proactively identify relevant topics and offer suggestions for DG-S involvement in close coordination with the Team Lead and Head of Section. Serve as a DG-S contact point for members of staff of the ESRB Secretariat at expert level.
The position offers you excellent opportunities to produce and develop statistics and statistical indicators for policymaking in a leading central bank. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.
Qualifications, experience and skills
Essential:
- a master's degree or equivalent in statistics, economics, banking, finance, business administration, data science, computer science or another relevant field (click here for details on degree equivalences);
- in addition to the above, a minimum of four years' experience in the field of statistics, supervision, banking or finance;
- a proven ability to analyse and interpret complex data sets and to summarise and present results;
- strong programming skills, particularly in Python, ideally also in R or SQL, and proven experience of applying these skills to business processes;
- ability to explain complicated technical issues in simple, non-technical language to different stakeholders, and to draft appropriate documentation;
- in addition to the above, experience with regular statistical/supervisory/data production, database management, time series analysis and/or data quality assessment;
- an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
Desired:
- knowledge of the EU banking system, bank balance sheets and prudential requirements;
- solid experience in collaborating with counterparts at the European level (ESCB, European Commission, ESRB, EBA, EIOPA, ESMA) and worldwide (BIS, FSB, IMF).
You engage collaboratively and proactively with others. You pursue team goals by planning and prioritising your tasks, and learn willingly from other people's diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.
You are motivated to contribute to the ECB's mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.
You are motivated to be part of our team and to develop and use your skills and competencies to achieve the aims of this position.
