Principal Process Engineer

The Role
Black Semi seeks to add highly skilled semiconductor metrology expertise to our fabrication team. Black is building devices that have never been manufactured in volume before, creating new structures using new materials, and has an expanding need to also develop our toolkit to systematically measure and evaluate them. The Process Engineer - Metrology brings a strategic approach to measurement, cooperating with colleagues to generate value-adding measurements in our cleanroom.Their attention, insight, and focussed work ensures that Black's manufacturing expertise improves over time.
In this role you will deploy standard metrology methods known in the industry and develop methods customized for our unique objectives to capture quantitative feedback for manufacturing processes. The scope of techniques includes dimensional, material property, and defect identification with a focus on in-fab in-line wafer-based systems.
Together with our team you will leave your fingerprints on our technology, though never literally we hope.
- Develop specific expertise on metrology equipment owned by Black Semi and leverage toolset to provide appropriate measurement capabilities for specific process challenges faced in our graphene-photonics manufacturing fab.
- Proactively coach colleagues in process engineering on metrology strategy at process steps diverse fabrication areas, developing robust measurement strategies to enhance the value of measurement.
- Provide technical guidance in mask-layout deployment of metrology equipment compatible and design rule compliant test pads for all layers for all products.
- Deploy effective systems for monitoring and maintaining the stability and correct calibration of facility-critical metrology equipment over time (SPC).
- Collaborate closely with technical teams, spanning multiple processing areas, to advance opportunities that enable disruptive improvements. Contribute a reliable measurement protocol to make evidence based decisions.
- Advise and mentor colleagues in various roles to apply robust and forward-thinking strategies when capturing nonstandard metrology. Devise cross calibration methods internally and externally.
- Fill the gaps in a start-up environment and sometimes execute tasks that need to get done when they are not your responsibility. Communicate early and often about changing needs, changing expectations, and a complicated network of dependencies.
Your Qualifications
- Has direct experience in a process engineering role in a semiconductor 200 or 300 mm manufactuing fab. Prior ownership responsibilities of dimensional metrology, specifically ellipsometry and scatterometry (OCD) techniques in FEOL and/or BEOL.
- Experience with raman spectroscopy and its application to 2D materials is considered a very strong plus.
- Experienced with organizing associated metadata, indirect metrology data, and value-add summary statistics alongside raw data in commerically acquired databases and analysis software.
- PhD or MSc graduate degree in following or related fields: Electrical, Chemical, Mechanical, Materials Eng; Physics; Chemistry. BSc degree followed by significant industrial experience welcome.
- Proficient use of English Language.
- Working knowledge and practical experience with SPC, DOE and statistically supported hypothesis testing (effectively leverage tools such as JMP)
- Able to work in a clean room environment, wear clean room attire, adhere to strict contamination protcols.
