The Mapmaking team sits at the heart of HERE's mission to create the world's most accurate, up-to-date, and intelligent maps. We design and operate scalable pipelines for onboarding massive datasets from customers and partners, while developing and optimizing geospatial processing services that transform raw map inputs into high-quality, production-ready products. Our work spans innovation in AI, big data, and algorithmic evolution to advance how maps are processed, validated, and enriched, supporting both large-scale customer programs with premium automotive brands and multi-industry partners, as well as internal transformation initiatives.

Responsibilities:

HERE Technologies is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineering Manager to join our highly motivated Mapmaking team. The Mapmaking team builds and operates core technologies and services for onboarding, processing, and quality assuring digital map data. You will lead cross-functional, globally distributed teams responsible for developing high-scale map processing services, evolving geospatial algorithms, and managing AWS-based infrastructure. This role combines technical leadership, people management, and strategic influence in the fields of cloud, big data, and AI-driven geospatial processing.

  • As a technical leader and an effective people manager, you can hold your own in a technical discussion, be a subject matter expert, and influence strategic product and technical decisions across organizations. 
  • You understand the primary importance of hiring top talent, coaching, and developing people to bring out their best and to foster an engaged, collaborative, and respectful team culture.
  • You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders like Product, Program, Sales, and the Architecture function to define technical product and business solution requirements. 
  • You will collaborate and contribute on technical architectural design and review. 
  • Enable your globally distributed teams to execute high-velocity software development, support their needs, and resolve barriers inhibiting their progress 
  • Communicate with senior leadership regarding progress against plans, issues, and needs. 
  • Drive the team's software development process and be accountable for conformance to software quality standards.  
  • Work collaboratively with other engineering teams to ensure cross-functional goals are met on schedule. 
  • Lead the team to follow Agile standards in engineering best practices
  • Engage in the Industry on advancements in Geo-spatial data processing, FOSS, and related market trends in the digital mapping domain.

Tech Stack: Java, Scala, Python, SQL, AWS, GitLab, Spark/EMR and GeoParquet/GeoJSON.

Role can be located in Berlin or Frankfurt (Schwalbach) location.



Who are you?

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Geo-Informatics, or a related field.

  • 8+ years of proven technical leadership and people management experience, including managing globally distributed teams.

  • 7+ years of backend and/or services application development experience.

  • Strong knowledge of software architecture, design, and code review.

  • Proven experience with any of the following software development languages like Java, Scala, Python, SQL

  • Expertise with DBMS, preferably PostgreSQL or Oracle.

  • Experience with high availability NoSQL databases, Big Data processing Frameworks, Spark, Flink, and Kafka.

  • Experience building high-throughput, low-latency, and highly reliable systems at scale.

  • Familiarity with HTTP, REST, JSON, and microservices architectures.

  • Hands-on experience with AWS, GCP, or Azure cloud environments.

  • Strong background in DevOps practices and CI/CD, with tools such as JIRA, Git, and GitLab.

  • Knowledge of geospatial data handling, OS libraries, frameworks, and GeoJSON.

  • Excellent communication skills in English, both written and spoken.

Nice-to-Have Skills
  • Engagement in industry forums or open-source geospatial communities.
