Lead, Embedded Software Engineering – HMI (m/f/d)

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced and driven Lead, Embedded Software Engineering – HMI to guide the development of user interface software for Heart-Lung Machines and other critical medical devices. In this role, you will lead a team of embedded software engineers focused on Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs) running on Embedded Linux platforms. You will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of robust, user-friendly, and regulatory-compliant software, with a strong focus on usability, safety, and performance.

As part of our functional software organization, you will play a key role in shaping the software discipline's best practices, supporting multiple product lines, and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams including UX, system engineering, product owners, and software architecture.

General Responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of embedded software engineers specializing in HMI development
• Drive the development of graphical user interfaces for embedded medical devices running Embedded Linux
• Ensure that the software developed is compliant with IEC 62304 Class C standards and other relevant regulatory frameworks
• Work closely with Product Owners, Software Architects, and System Engineers to define and refine software requirements
• Promote modular, maintainable, and scalable software designs aligned with system architecture
• Define and implement best practices for embedded HMI development, including coding standards, design patterns, and usability principles
• Support integration and testing activities in collaboration with the Software Test Engineering team
• Contribute to resource planning, team development, and competency growth within the HMI software domain
• Stay current on industry trends, tools, and technologies related to embedded HMI and medical device software

Skills and Experience

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field
• Several years of experience in embedded software development, with a focus on GUI/HMI
• Some years in a technical leadership or team lead role
• Experience in Agile development methodologies within regulated industries
• Proven experience in embedded software development, particularly on Embedded Linux platforms
• Strong background in GUI development frameworks (e.g., Qt, GTK, HTML5-based UIs)
• Solid understanding of IEC 62304, ISO 13485, and ISO 14971 standards
• Experience with software development in safety-critical or regulated environments, ideally medical devices
• Proficiency in C++, Python, and scripting languages used in embedded environments
• Knowledge and hands-on experience with Static Code Analysis tools and Unit Testing frameworks
• Familiarity with UI/UX principles, human factors engineering, and HMI usability testing
• Knowledge of software lifecycle management tools (e.g., Git, Jira, CI/CD pipelines)
• Understanding of performance optimization and resource management in embedded systems

• Demonstrated experience leading or mentoring software teams

• Ability to manage multiple priorities and support delivery across several products

• Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective cross-functional collaboration
• Focus on team development, technical coaching, and fostering a quality-first mindset
• Occasional travel may be required
