Research Associate for the Project “UDIET: Investigating solvent effects in the dynamics of biologically relevant model chromophores” - 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG
- InstitutionFaculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences, Department of Physics, CFEL
Salary levelEGR. 13 TV-L
Start date01.01.2025 or as soon as possible, fixed for a period of two years (This is a fixed-term contract in accordance with Section 2 of the academic fixed-term labor contract act [Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz, WissZeitVG]).
Application deadline10.10.2024
Scope of workfull-time position suitable for part-time**Responsibilities**:
Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.
The dynamics of molecules strongly depends on their environment. Hydrogen bonds are an important interaction mitigating these effects and thus are of universal importance in chemistry and (bio)chemistry. To study these effects in detail, we aim at bridging the gap between single isolated molecules and molecules in solvation. This project is embedded in the collaborative Röntgen-Angstrom-Cluster program UDIET with partners in Hamburg (Germany) and Lund (Sweden). It is also closely attached to the International Helmholtz Graduate School HELIOS.
Your project aims to disentangle the influence of single water molecules attached one-by-one to biologically relevant model chromophores on the photo-induced ultrafast electronic and molecular dynamics. This is based on our experience with the control and imaging of isolated microsolvated systems and our collaboration partners experience with attosecond laser technology. The size-selected microsolvated systems will be studied using photoelectron
- and ion-coincidence-imaging techniques. Recording and correlating all photo fragments allows for a reconstruction of the complete dynamics even in the molecular frame. The hydrogen bond interactions will be investigated by varying the geometries between the solvent and the biomolecule while investigating the induced photo-driven processes. These studies will be performed in well-defined conditions in an ultrahigh vacuum, using molecular beams and light sources such as high-intensity ultrashort-pulse lasers, synchrotrons and X-ray free-electron lasers (FELs).
Specific duties:
- conduction and improvement of experiments
- data analysis and interpretation
- publishing the results in scientific journals
- participation in international conferences
**Profile**:
A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate.
A doctoral degree in physics, chemical physics, or in a comparable relevant field is required. We expect experience in areas covering quantum mechanics, molecular physics, molecular dynamics, molecular beams, vacuum equipment, and ultrafast laser sources including optics and programming. Experience with large-scale facilities such as synchrotrons or free-electron lasers is an advantage. Very good communication skills in English and/or German are required.
