- PhD Position for “Sea ice energy budgets from field data and numerical models” (M/F/d)
**Background**
The thesis will work on the hypothesis that changing sea ice properties and associated radiative fluxes enhance Arctic amplification. It will study the most relevant scales (time and space) that govern radiative fluxes in ice-covered oceans and analyze how regional and seasonal changes in sea-ice surface properties contribute to Arctic amplification. The work will be based on field observations and numerical simulations of sea ice properties in the Arctic Ocean. A focus is spectral radiation and mass balance measurements from our remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and autonomous stations. These measurements will be used to derive and evaluate improvements in numerical models, describing physical snow and sea ice properties and energy fluxes.
**Tasks**
The aim of the position is to complete a PhD thesis in sea ice physics with the specific tasks/challenges to
- Analyze field observations of physical properties of snow and sea ice, incl. complex data sets obtained from a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV)
- Work on different ice types and spatial scales in order to derive large-scale energy budgets for different seasons
- Combine field observations with numerical process modeling to improve our understanding of sea ice energy budgets in the Arctic
- Design and analyze numerical simulations of radiation fluxes through snow and sea ice for different climate conditions
- Link results from sea ice and snow observations to processes in the upper ocean and lower atmosphere
- Work closely with other PhD students and project partners approaching this challenge from the different perspectives of the changing Arctic atmosphere-ice-ocean system
**Requirements**:
- A degree (Master, Diploma) in geophysics, physics, meteorology, or comparable science
- Strong analytical skills working on scientific data
- Proficiency in programming/scripting languages (e.g., Matlab, Python, Fortran, or similar) as well as the operational systems Windows and Linux
- Excellent English language skills, both written and spoken
- The willingness and ability to participate in research expeditions to the polar regions lasting several weeks.
Previous experience with polar research and processes (sea ice, atmosphere, ocean) is advantageous.
**Further Information**
This position is limited to 3 years. The salary will be paid in accordance with the Collective Agreement for the Public Service of the Federation (Tarifvertrag des öffentlichen Dienstes, TVöD Bund), up to salary level **13 (75%)**. The place of employment will be **Bremerhaven.**
