Senior Software Development Engineer Backend Java

About the Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Development Engineer Backend Java to join our team at BASF Digital Farming GmbH. As a key member of our digital farming unit, you will be responsible for the Java-based backend development, GIS architecture, and operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement efficient and cost-effective handling and processing of large volumes of geospatial data layers.
  • Collaborate with our remote sensing research team to implement satellite / drone imagery processing.
  • Own the entire software engineering lifecycle for Digital Farming business needs, from designing architectural components to implementation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • Engage in product governance, including writing epics and user stories, and support product managers within our agile development framework.
Requirements
  • Bachelor degree in computer sciences, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, GIS, or related fields.
  • Extensive experience in Java backend development for production environments.
  • Solid experience with Java GeoTools, PostGIS, GeoServer, and ideally in STAC.
  • Strong understanding of geospatial concepts, including coordinate precision, geometry simplification, statistical clustering, filters, and geometric operations on both raster and vector data.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native geospatial technologies such as STAC and GeoParquet is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication in English and analytical skills to build and maintain good working relationships across the organization.
