Senior Mathematician for Java Backend Development

RESPONSIBILITIES

We offer innovative digital solutions for sustainable agriculture by optimizing crop production and supporting farmers worldwide through monitoring of soil and crop conditions, assisting with disease and pest recognition, and recommending tailored treatments based on in-field conditions.

  • As a Senior Software Engineer Backend Java/GIS, you will be responsible for the Java-based backend development, GIS architecture, and operations inside the globally operating digital farming unit of BASF.
  • You will ensure efficient and cost-effective handling and processing of large volumes of geospatial data layers, such as machinery data, soil, and satellite imagery.
  • In close collaboration with our remote sensing research team, you will support the implementation of satellite/drone imagery processing.
  • You will work together with the team to own the entire software engineering lifecycle for Digital Farming business needs, from designing architectural components, concepts, and interface specifications to implementation, deployment, and monitoring.
  • You will also engage in product governance, including writing epics and user stories, and support product managers within our agile development framework.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor's degree in computer sciences, natural sciences, engineering, mathematics, GIS, or related fields.
  • Extensive experience in Java backend development for production environments.
  • Solid experience with Java GeoTools, PostGIS, GeoServer, and ideally in STAC.
  • Strong understanding of geospatial concepts, including coordinate precision, geometry simplification, statistical clustering, filters, and geometric operations on both raster and vector data.
  • Familiarity with cloud-native geospatial technologies such as STAC and GeoParquet is an advantage.
  • Excellent communication in English and analytical skills to build and maintain good working relationships across the entire organization.
