We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled student research assistant to join our Applied Machine Learning (AML) group at the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications, Heinrich Hertz Institute HHI. The successful candidate will work on developing new innovative solutions for current and future key topics in the field of climate science and weather forecasting.
Responsibilities- Design and implement new generative deep learning architectures for weather applications
- Analyze and preprocess climate- and weather data modalities, such as time series, image data, texts- and numeric data, especially remote sensing or radar data
- Participate in projects related to early warning systems of extreme weather events
- Orchestrate and document Deep Learning experiments
- Explore explainable AI methods to identify drivers of weather events
- Process and visualize large amounts of data
- Review relevant literature and data
- Test software and frameworks
- Study of mathematics, computer science, physics, engineering or similar with good to very good grades
- Strong programming skills in Python with knowledge of frameworks such as NumPy, Pytorch, Pandas etc
- Experience and confidence in using Linux (Ubuntu) via terminal
- Advanced knowledge in Machine Learning
- Motivated in writing clean and tidy code (implementation, testing, documentation, versioning with git)
- Affinity for technologies
- Curiosity about a deeper understanding of Deep Learning architectures
- Interest in the intersection of AI and climate science
