PhD Opportunity in Medical Physics and Engineering for MRI Magnet Simulation

Reference number:

  • Full-time
  • Medical Physics in Radiology

At the German Cancer Research Center, our mission is to advance research aimed at eliminating cancer. We explore the mechanisms of cancer development, identify risk factors, and innovate strategies for prevention. Our work focuses on enhancing diagnostic methods and improving treatment outcomes for cancer patients. Every role contributes to this vital mission, whether in research, administration, or support services.

In collaboration with the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), we are engaged in a pioneering project that merges magnetic resonance (MR) imaging with ion beam radiation therapy.

The use of ion irradiation allows for precise delivery of high radiation doses directly to tumors. Accurate modeling of tissue is essential for effective radiation planning. MR imaging provides superior insights into soft tissue distribution compared to traditional computed tomography (CT), which is typically employed in radiotherapy planning. As a non-invasive imaging technique, MR imaging also facilitates anatomical assessments of patients before or during treatment, enabling tailored therapeutic approaches. This integration of technologies represents a cutting-edge research domain.

We are offering a doctoral position for candidates with backgrounds in physics, medical physics, engineering, or mathematics. The project's objective is to design and analyze innovative magnet geometries optimized for MR-guided ion therapy, utilizing superconducting magnets made from high-temperature superconductors (HTS). The research will involve magnetostatic simulations using finite element method (FEM) tools (CST, Opera) to create uniform magnetic fields, assess coil configurations, conduct magnetic force analyses, evaluate power consumption, design magnetic shielding, and ensure safety and compliance. While the project primarily focuses on numerical simulations, there will be ample opportunities for collaboration with commercial magnet manufacturers to incorporate practical design considerations.

The initial year of the doctoral contract will be affiliated with Heidelberg University Hospital, followed by two years at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ).

Key Responsibilities
  • Engage actively in a significant multidisciplinary research initiative
  • Collaborate closely with scientific partners at the German Cancer Research Center and the Heidelberg Ion Beam Therapy Center (HIT)

  • Simulate magnets tailored for MR-guided radiation therapy utilizing protons and heavier ions (e.g., carbon ions), leveraging HTS material properties to achieve innovative geometries
  • Establish specific requirements for magnet design, materials, and coil windings through numerical simulations, considering material constraints
  • Collaborate within a larger team focused on optimizing other MRI subsystems, including gradients and radiofrequency hardware
  • Publish findings in reputable journals and present at scientific conferences
Candidate Profile
  • Completed studies with a diploma or master's degree in physics, medical physics, engineering, mathematics, applied mathematics, or a related field
  • Familiarity with MR physics, scientific programming (MATLAB, C/C++, etc.), and electromagnetic simulations is advantageous
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary environment with strong communication skills
  • Demonstrated reliability, initiative, motivation, and teamwork capabilities
  • Proficient in English, both written and spoken; knowledge of German is a plus
