The Hertie School in Berlin invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher position in the Centre for Fundamental Rights. The successful candidate will contribute to the AFAR (Algorithmic Fairness for Asylum-Seekers and Refugees) research project, focusing on the themes of fairness in automated decision-making in migration and asylum governance in Europe.
The postholder will work closely with the Principal Investigator, Professor Cathryn Costello, and other members of the AFAR research group to develop a work plan for individual research output, contribute to joint publications, and support team research and science communication activities.
The ideal candidate has an excellent academic track record, knowledge of international and EU law, and experience in collaborative research. They should be able to communicate complex ideas to diverse audiences and have very good presentation and communication skills in English.
The position is designed to enable an early career legal scholar to engage with the AFAR project and develop their expertise in human rights and artificial intelligence.
- Develop and deliver a work plan for individual research output on the themes of the AFAR project
- Contribute to one joint publication with another AFAR team member on the AFAR themes
- Support the team's legal research on theories of fairness, fairness standards and AI, drawing on European human rights and EU law
- Arrange and participate in AFAR workshops and dissemination activities across Europe
- Support the development of the AFAR Tech Litigation Database
- Actively contribute to the academic life of the Centre for Fundamental Rights
