Job Description:

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD researcher to join our team at Forschungszentrum Jülich. The successful candidate will work on the design of the vacuum system for the Einstein Telescope (ET), a next-generation gravitational wave detector. The ET will be a major European project, and our team is responsible for the development of the vacuum system, which will be the largest UHV system ever built.

The PhD researcher will be responsible for the development of the general layout of the vacuum system, simulation of the vacuum conditions, and heat management during operation. They will also work on the development of an emergency fast closing system, a compact fast closing valve, and strategies for leakage detection, maintenance, repair, and corrosion protection. Additionally, they will investigate new materials compositions and coatings for use in UHV applications.

The successful candidate will have a Master's degree in mechanical engineering, process engineering, or experimental physics, and excellent knowledge of vacuum technology, design engineering, and software for engineering design. They will also have experience in experimental work, design, and construction of test systems, and supervision of test runs. The ability to work in an international team and excellent communication skills in English are essential. Knowledge of German is an advantage.
