The MobiliTraIN initiative is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Action Doctoral Network focused on enhancing the fundamental understanding of ion mobility high-resolution mass spectrometry (IM-HRMS). This program aims to provide reference materials and standardization guidelines, develop advanced methodologies for IM-HRMS applications in biopharmaceutical development, biological omics studies, and non-target contaminant screening, while training 13 doctoral candidates to lay the groundwork for industrial adoption of IM-HRMS.

This network unites some of the most innovative experts in the ion mobility and mass spectrometry fields, encompassing a wide array of applications from biomedicine to environmental science. It includes various academic and industrial partners from across Europe, fostering close collaboration through joint symposia and training workshops. This robust international scientific framework, along with direct interactions between academia and industry, offers an ideal environment for the personal and scientific growth of emerging researchers.

Responsibilities

The PhD candidate will be employed by Bruker Daltonics GmbH & Co. KG and will be enrolled in the PhD program at the Jena University Hospital. The candidate will utilize state-of-the-art instrumentation to explore fundamental characteristics of tandem ion mobility spectrometry (TIMS) devices. Working within an interdisciplinary research and prototyping team at Bruker, the candidate will collaborate with university research labs, applying gained insights to develop novel workflows relevant to biomedicine and interpret corresponding results.

Specific tasks include:

  • Identifying, quantifying, and managing the impact of ions' translational temperature on their internal temperatures and potential fragmentation across various TIMS configurations.
  • Developing and demonstrating a first-order collision cross-section (CCS) determination, comparable to established methods on drift tube IMS instruments.
  • Translating in-depth knowledge of TIMS technology to biomedical investigations conducted by different research labs within the doctoral network.
  • Contributing to a standardized approach for evaluating and comparing fundamental physical properties and outcomes using various ion mobility spectrometry techniques.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree or equivalent in Physics, Physical Chemistry, or a related field.
  • Experience and knowledge in one or more of the following areas: Ion mobility spectrometry, mass spectrometry, ion optics and physics, Python programming, gas phase instrument development.
  • Strong analytical, logical, and innovative thinking skills.
  • Effective communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
  • Initial experience in preparing and writing scientific publications.
  • Proficient in scientific English (oral and written).
  • Fluency in German would be advantageous.
