Chief Operating Officer

EMBL is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Chief Operating Officer to lead the Laboratory's administration and operations across all six sites. The successful candidate will have significant delegated authority and autonomy to ensure the integration and operational effectiveness of the Laboratory's research support and administration.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the administration and operations of EMBL's six sites
- Develop and implement administrative and operational policies
- Manage the Laboratory's finances, including budgeting and financial planning
- Oversee the Human Resources, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Finance and Purchasing, Grants Office, Legal, Data Protection and Compliance, Sustainability, Campus and Facilities Infrastructures, Information Technology, and Health and Safety departments
- Develop and maintain close working relationships with national and local authorities, the EMBL Council, and the Finance Committee
- Strong background in administrative and operational leadership
- Experience of leading change and driving modernisation
- Financial competence and ability to oversee high-level complex budgetary information
- Ability to work collaboratively and productively with colleagues from diverse disciplines and nationalities
- Fluency in English and German
