About the Role

This position is responsible for providing legal support for all American Express businesses in Germany and Austria. You'll work closely with our senior management team to ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive legal advice and support for all American Express businesses in Germany and Austria.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance of German and Austrian payment institution branches.
  • Identify and manage legal risks in Germany and Austria.
  • Monitor relevant legislative developments at the domestic and international level.
  • Shape American Express's legal position on upcoming new laws and support lobbying efforts.
  • Manage complex legal customer complaints and litigation in Germany and Austria.
  • Report matters bearing significant regulatory, financial, or brand risk to management and VP/Group Counsel.
  • Assist in managing relationships with local regulators.
  • Commercial contract work, including drafting, reviewing, and analyzing agreements.
  • Shaping legal relationships through contract negotiations and realizing American Express's rights.
  • Legal support for business on marketing initiatives and strategic projects.
  • Examine legal issues, clarify facts, and develop solutions.
  • Primary legal support for acquisitions, strategic alliances, and major transactions.
  • Support new product development and business re-engineering initiatives.
  • Proactively ensure management and the organization understand and comply with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Brief outside counsel and manage external legal fees.
  • Represent American Express in courts, negotiations, and association meetings.
  • Provide legal advice to the Country Executive Team, Risk Committees, and Branch Governance Committee.
  • Lead a team of two lawyers supporting the successful candidate.

Requirements

  • Fully qualified German lawyer (ideally with two Prädikatsexamen).
  • Substantial practice experience (8+ years) in the payment services or banking sector.
  • Fluent in English and German.
  • Proven record of superior drafting skills.
  • Proven record of understanding commercial implications of legal advice.
  • Proven ability to handle a wide variety of work and balance conflicting demands to high levels of client satisfaction.
  • Familiarity with laws relating to credit and charge card, travel, banking, and consumer financial services, as well as regulatory law applicable to banks/payment institutions.
  • Familiarity with project management, particularly outsourcing and re-engineering projects.
