The integration of renewable energy sources and decentralized energy resources (DER) into the electrical grid is resulting in an increasing number of Virtual Power Plants (VPPs). A VPP is a network that combines distributed power generation units, adaptable energy consumers, and storage systems, managing these components as a unified entity to supply power to the grid or specific users. In this environment, utility companies and VPP operators depend on extensive communication networks to remotely manage and coordinate various DER. This includes renewable energy facilities, battery storage systems, and inverter-connected devices such as electric vehicles and heat pumps.
With the rising awareness of cyber threats, VPP operators recognize the critical need to enhance the cyber resilience of their systems. Cyber-attacks can severely disrupt operational efficiency, compromise customer service, and threaten the stability of the power grid. Therefore, it is essential for VPP operators to have effective tools and methodologies to proactively evaluate and enhance their cyber resilience posture.
We seek enthusiastic students interested in undertaking a challenging thesis focused on the cyber resilience of Virtual Power Plants (VPP). The project will concentrate on the design, execution, and assessment of a self-assessment framework for cyber resilience tailored to the unique characteristics and demands of VPP.
Responsibilities:
Potential tasks may include:
- Literature Review on Cyber Resilience Definitions: Conduct a thorough review of existing literature to identify definitions and metrics related to cyber resilience, and analyze current measurement approaches.
- Development of a Cyber Resilience Model: Create a new assessment method for the cyber resilience of VPP's IT infrastructure based on literature findings. One expected outcome is a weighted quantification function that encapsulates essential properties for maintaining VPP functionality, developed using common features from key European and international standards and frameworks.
- Self-Assessment Tool Design and Implementation: Develop a web-based tool for assessing the cyber resilience of VPP, incorporating technical details such as interfaces with various VPP components and protocols for data analysis, while considering security and privacy mechanisms.
- Evaluation: Assess the tool's effectiveness, usability, and gather user feedback. Analyze evaluation results to provide informed recommendations for further tool development and optimization, identifying technical improvements to enhance VPP cyber resilience.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Interest in the latest developments in cyber resilience.
- Knowledge of energy systems and software development is a plus.
- Interest in interdisciplinary research areas such as cybersecurity engineering and usable security.
- Strong initiative and ability to work collaboratively.
- Proficiency in German or English.
