Sustainability Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled Sustainability Engineer to join our Process Research team at International Flavors & Fragrances (IFF). As a key member of our team, you will play a critical role in driving sustainability initiatives and ensuring the long-term success of our business.

• Champion life cycle and sustainability thinking in product and process development, manufacturing technology, production, and core sustainability functions.
• Act as sustainability focal point for new and existing product and process development initiatives, developing solutions that integrate life cycle assessment (LCA) into the development process.
• Perform LCA using appropriate modeling software and calculate the carbon footprint of existing and new products, including production technologies.
• Track and communicate sustainability goals and indicators, including energy and natural resource usage, renewable resources, waste generation, and recycling.
• Collaborate with R&D and various functions, such as Manufacturing & Technology, Operations, EH&S, Quality, and suppliers, to collect relevant data required for LCA modeling.
• Document results in SimaPro and other relevant formats, including reports, articles, and presentations.
• Identify strategic sustainability approaches and anchor them in operational processes and organizational structures.
• Identify footprint reduction opportunities for our product portfolio and share with relevant internal and external stakeholders.
• Enable and support audit processes by facilitating the integration of sustainability aspects into ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 audits.
• Monitor or track sustainability indicators, such as energy usage, natural resource usage, waste generation, and recycling.
• Stay up-to-date on external trends and perspectives related to sustainability and provide consultation to businesses as required.

We are looking for a highly qualified and experienced Sustainability Engineer with a strong background in industrial processes, energy, environmental, or sustainability. The ideal candidate will have:

• A PhD or M.Sc. in science or engineering (STEM) or B.Sc. with extended professional experience.
• Relevant professional experience and a track record in similar sustainability roles, with a strong focus on life cycle assessment (LCA) and sustainability targets.
• Proficient in using LCA software, such as SimaPro Expert or similar.
• At least 2 years of experience in external reporting, compliance, sustainability certification programs, energy transition, carbon footprinting, and project management in the field of sustainability.
• Knowledge in pharmaceutical or food production technologies, chemistry, mass balancing, and low or zero-carbon is an advantage.
• Data-driven and critical thinking combined with a business-oriented mindset.
• Ability to perform independently as well as interact effectively within international and cross-functional teams.
• Ability to see the big picture and think longer term, balancing short-term and long-term goals.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Ability to speak fluently in English, with at least basic German language skills required.
