PhD Position – Biogeochemical Soil and Rhizosphere Modeling
This doctoral position is part of the project "Combining Root Contrasted Phenotypes for More Resilient Agro Ecosystems" (CROP), funded by the German Ministry for Education and Science (BMBF). The initiative aims to explore the advantages of using cultivar mixtures with complementary root characteristics in agricultural settings. Our research evaluates the implications of these cropping systems on water, carbon, and nitrogen dynamics, microbial ecosystems, and overall yield.
Utilizing a combination of experimental methodologies and advanced modeling techniques, your role will involve enhancing the existing soil-rhizosphere-plant model, which incorporates a 3D functional-structural approach (CPlantBox). This model is designed to accurately simulate plant growth, interactions with soil, and the rhizosphere microbiome.
Your Responsibilities:
- Enhance the current model to include mucilage effects on soil hydraulic properties and the growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.
- Conduct literature reviews and meta-analyses to support model parameterization with evidence-based insights.
- Calibrate the model using experimental data from previous project phases.
- Execute scenario simulations and interpret the results.
- Develop and implement a framework for assessing drought resilience and nitrogen use efficiency based on experimental and simulation data.
- Present findings at conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Your Profile:
- A Master's degree in bioengineering, environmental sciences, soil science, or applied mathematics.
- Knowledge in plant science, soil science, and microbial ecology.
- Strong foundation in differential calculus.
- Proficiency in programming.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international, interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Fluency in English.
