About the Institute
The Institute of Bio- and Geosciences – Agrosphere (IBG-3) is dedicated to enhancing our understanding of biogeochemical and hydrological processes within terrestrial ecosystems. Our research emphasizes the environmental factors influencing biogeochemical cycles, exchange processes, and nutrient dynamics across the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. We utilize a combination of experimental approaches, modeling, and cutting-edge observation technologies to connect model, process, and management scales, ultimately supporting sustainable soil and water use while assessing the impacts of climate and land use changes on ecosystems.
PhD Position Overview
We are offering a compelling PhD Position in Biogeochemical Soil and Rhizosphere Modeling. This role is part of the project "Combining Root Contrasted Phenotypes for More Resilient Agroecosystems" (CROP), funded by the German Ministry for Education and Science (BMBF). In collaboration with academic partners, the project aims to evaluate the advantages of cultivar mixtures with complementary root traits in agricultural settings. Your research will focus on assessing water, carbon, and nitrogen fluxes, microbial communities, and crop yields through a combination of experimental methods and modeling.
Your Responsibilities Include:
- Enhancing the existing model to incorporate mucilage effects on soil hydraulic properties and the growth of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.
- Conducting literature reviews and meta-analyses to inform model parameterization.
- Calibrating the model using experimental data from previous project phases.
- Executing scenario simulations and interpreting the results.
- Developing and applying a framework for assessing drought resilience and nitrogen use efficiency based on experimental and simulation data.
- Presenting and disseminating findings at conferences and in peer-reviewed journals.
Qualifications:
- A Master's degree in bioengineering, environmental sciences, soil science, or applied mathematics.
- Familiarity with plant science, soil science, and microbial ecology.
- Strong foundation in differential calculus.
- Proficiency in programming.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within an international, interdisciplinary team.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Fluency in English.
