We are currently seeking a Process Development Scientist II (all genders) to join our Biologics Product Development Science & Technology team in a permanent, full-time capacity.

In this role, you will focus on process development to support fill-finish manufacturing of biologics, utilizing theoretical and scale-down models as necessary. AbbVie has a rich history of developing injectable drug products in various formats, and we continuously strive to enhance our formulation and process development through innovative techniques.

The Process Engineering (PE) Group aims to integrate engineering perspectives with biopharmaceutical development. Depending on your background, you will have the opportunity to introduce new methods related to small-scale models and computational modeling into our process development efforts. Your primary focus will be on supporting the development of biologics drug products for injectable drugs, emphasizing heat transfer, thermo- and fluid dynamics applied to processes such as freezing, thawing, mixing, sterile filtration, pumping, filling, and lyophilization.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support projects with a focus on machine-oriented process engineering, from troubleshooting to the application of small-scale and computational models.
  • Act as a fill-finish expert within Product Development, Science and Technology, and liaise with early-stage R&D and Drug Substance Manufacturing.
  • Provide global and cross-functional support to other development groups in model application, tech transfer to production, up-/downscaling, troubleshooting, and regulatory filing documentation.
  • Propose, engineer, build, and test prototype machines, integrating them into modular workflows and ensuring automatic data generation and evaluation.
  • Facilitate the understanding and implementation of simulations into routine development practices.
  • Generate data from bench experiments and gather data from machines in pilot plants or commercial equipment.
  • Utilize a Quality by Design (QbD) approach, focusing on simplicity and efficiency while applying Lean and/or Scrum principles.
  • Independently work on scientific topics, assess and implement novel technologies, and present results to diverse audiences.
  • Develop and implement strategies for process optimization, exploring AI and deep learning integration.
  • Participate actively in all development phases, particularly late-stage projects and technical transfers to commercial production.
  • Supervise interns and students in their academic projects.

Qualifications:

  • BS or equivalent education with typically 7 or more years of experience, or MS with typically 5 or more years of experience.
  • Degree in engineering or a related field with industry experience in pharma or biopharma.
  • Proven track record of significant process improvements from concept through implementation.
  • Experience in process engineering and/or combination product development.
  • Familiarity with DoE, QbD, and statistical methods.
  • Knowledge of Lean/Scrum principles and AI/deep learning.
  • Strong understanding of fill-finish related unit operations and their practical implementation.
  • Structured thinking based on first principles (physics, physico-chemical, thermodynamic).
  • Ability to work independently and lead teams effectively.
  • Proficient in presenting results to a broad audience.
  • Experience with biotechnological manufacturing processes and associated analytics.
  • Strong decision-making skills and a pragmatic approach to problem-solving.
  • Proficient spoken and written English skills; excellent German language skills are a plus.
