Engineering Specialist - Power Conversion

Location: Aachen/Bonn, Germany

Overview of the Role:

In this role, you will lead initiatives in innovative domains related to energy transition and digital transformation. Your responsibilities will encompass areas such as distributed energy resource management, the deployment of new grid services, and the advancement of digitalization strategies. You will also focus on enhancing power quality and developing electric vehicle charging solutions, alongside advanced monitoring and maintenance techniques.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Collaborate with the Regional Team Lead at Eaton Research Labs to identify technical gaps and shape the technology roadmap for Eaton's power systems offerings.
  • Engage in a wide array of technical tasks, including the design, implementation, and integration of innovative solutions.
  • Contribute to the development of cutting-edge technologies in both AC and DC power systems, ensuring Eaton's competitive edge in the evolving market.
  • Design, implement, and validate control and optimization strategies for diverse energy system applications.
  • Transform innovative concepts into prototypes and conduct feasibility assessments.
  • Act as a subject matter expert, participating actively in industry and technical groups.
  • Assist the Aachen/Bonn team in establishing new research initiatives.
  • Drive innovation by securing intellectual property through patents and publishing in respected peer-reviewed journals.
  • Serve as Principal Investigator during project proposal development, execution, and reporting.
Qualifications:
  • PhD or near-graduation PhD candidate in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline from an accredited institution; a Master's degree in a relevant field is also acceptable.
  • Proven experience in technology solution development with a track record of delivering high-quality outcomes.
  • Demonstrated expertise in areas such as EV charging, vehicle-to-grid/home systems, power systems automation, and grid-intelligence algorithms.
  • Strong background in the integration and deployment of control and management algorithms in field tests and demonstration projects.
  • Experience in integrating generation and storage technologies in practical applications.
Skills Assessment:
  • Experience in demand response, energy storage, renewable energy, microgrid systems, and their integration with power grid operations.
  • Familiarity with advanced control and optimization techniques to tackle emerging R&D challenges in modern energy systems.
  • Proficiency in power systems simulation software such as MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Experience with real-time simulations and hardware-in-the-loop systems, including OPAL-RT, RTDS, or Typhoon.
