Postdoctoral Researcher in Convergent Paradigmatization

Position Overview
The Universität Freiburg is seeking a postdoctoral researcher to engage in a significant research initiative focused on the theme of "E Pluribus Unum – Emergent, Convergent Paradigms." This role will involve an in-depth exploration of convergent paradigmatization from a typological standpoint.
Research Focus
Convergent paradigms are characterized by grammatical forms, referred to as "grams," that originate from diverse word classes. Over time, these forms have developed increasingly paradigmatic relationships with one another. The research will delve into how these grammatical elements, which stem from various source categories, have converged in their distribution.
For instance, Indo-Aryan postpositions serve as a prime example, having evolved from nouns, adverbs, and participles.
Research Objectives
This project aims to illuminate the interactions between various forces driving grammatical change, including but not limited to source determination and analogical change. The investigation will focus on the convergent paradigmatization of selected grammatical categories across multiple language families, including Tibeto-Burman, Indo-Aryan, Mayan, and Oceanic.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD with a strong foundation in grammaticalization and typology. Expertise in languages beyond the Indo-European family is highly valued, particularly through fieldwork and/or corpus-linguistic research.
Compensation
The salary for this position will be determined in accordance with E13 TV-L standards.
