Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Deutschland Karlsruher Institut für Technologie Vollzeit

Position Overview

The field of Advanced Magnetic Resonance Techniques (AMRT) serves as a pivotal analytical approach that delivers profound insights into the molecular structure of various materials. AMRT is intricately linked to a more prevalent technique recognized for its extensive application in medical diagnostics – Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI). Both methodologies operate on analogous physical principles and encounter similar technical hurdles.

A critical element of solid-state AMRT apparatus is the rotor that accommodates and rotates the specimen at velocities exceeding 1 kHz through pneumatic control. The rotor must be engineered and produced to ensure that it can (i) accurately position the specimen within the apparatus, and (ii) rotate it at the specified speed with a tolerance of no more than ± 1 Hz. Achieving these ambitious design objectives necessitates rigorous testing post-manufacturing utilizing additive manufacturing techniques. These responsibilities demand a solid foundation in mechanical and electrical engineering to tackle challenges such as developing an angular positioning system with a precision of ±0.1° and accurately monitoring the rotational speed to within ± 0.1 Hz.

Are you passionate about microelectronics and automation? Are you prepared to take on the challenge of designing and evaluating a sophisticated rotor that could be utilized in next-generation AMRT systems? If your answer is affirmative, we are eager to meet you.

The specific responsibilities within this initiative will include: (i) designing mechanical elements for the rotor assembly; (ii) producing the individual components using additive manufacturing; (iii) setting up a testing environment that incorporates electrical signal acquisition and processing tools to monitor the rotational speed. Throughout the Master's project, you will gain practical experience in mechanical and electronic design as well as additive manufacturing. Furthermore, you will have the chance to engage with a diverse array of instruments and methodologies.

You will become a part of the broader team within the Spin & Photon division.
