PhD Position in Hydrogen Measurement

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student to join our Institute for Climate and Energy Systems – Stratosphere (ICE-4). The successful candidate will work on developing a measurement system for hydrogen (H2) using the AirCore technique, with a focus on quantifying hydrogen in atmospherically relevant concentration ranges.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Establish and perform balloon-borne measurements of hydrogen (H2) using the AirCore technique
  • Develop a measurement system based on Gas Chromatography with Helium Ionization and Electron Capture Detection (GC-HID-ECD)
  • Quantify hydrogen in atmospherically relevant concentration ranges (50–700 parts per billion, ppb) with high precision
  • Determine the distributions of other important trace gases such as methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O)
Requirements:
  • Master's degree in a relevant field (e.g., atmospheric science, chemistry, physics)
