The Role

We are seeking an exceptional engineering leader to oversee the Environmental Conditioning System (ECS) and join our innovative team that will redefine urban e-mobility.

This position will report to the Head of Systems Design and will be part of an interdisciplinary Integrated Project Team (IPT). You will hold overall responsibility for the design, development, functionality, performance, and certification of the ECS for our Lilium Jet, from prototype through to serial production.

The ECS is essential for various functions, including but not limited to Cabin and Cockpit Air Conditioning, Avionics Bay Cooling, Battery Conditioning, and Cockpit Window Defogging.

This role will collaborate with relevant stakeholders and design leads to establish requirements and coordinate the development of components within the system. Additionally, you will be expected to lead, guide, and mentor members of the ECS design team.

Your Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Lead the ECS team and drive the development of the ECS through to serial production.
  • Ensure that functional, performance, structural, manufacturing, and maintenance aspects of the system design are integrated to meet certification and business requirements.
  • Assist in the supplier selection and management process.
  • Ensure that system and subsystem interfaces are identified, documented, and managed according to Lilium processes and industry best practices.
  • Drive the definition and management of requirements in accordance with ARP-4754A/ED-79A.
  • Ensure adherence to the design system architecture in line with ARP-4754A/ED-79A and ARP-4761.
  • Manage the system implementation cycle, focusing on verification, testing, and compliance, particularly System Qualification based on DO160G requirements.
  • Oversee the lifecycle of Problem Reports and participate in the Change Control Board for evaluation and resolution.
  • Create, review, and approve certification-related documentation.
  • Provide guidance on certification matters and engage with regulatory bodies.
  • Ensure that system development aligns with project timelines.
  • Provide regular updates to IPT Leadership regarding system development progress, including identification and escalation of dependencies and blockers.

Your Profile:

  • Degree/Masters/PhD (or equivalent) in Engineering or a related field is required.
  • Minimum of 10 years' experience in the development and implementation of aircraft Environmental Conditioning Systems (ECS) and/or Thermal Management Systems (TMS), from concept to service entry.
  • Thorough understanding of safety principles and practices in civilian aircraft operations and certification.
  • Familiarity with hardware and software development processes according to DO-178B/C and DO-254.
  • Experience in test instrumentation, execution, and data processing.
  • Experience in System qualification based on DO160G is essential.
  • Deep understanding of thermodynamics principles in the context of aircraft thermal management and environmental control.
  • Proven experience with type certification methods is required.
  • At least 3 years' experience in an engineering leadership role is necessary.
  • Experience working with various suppliers and managing deliverables is required.
  • Fluent English language skills are essential; proficiency in German or other languages is advantageous.
