The BMW Group presents an engaging and diverse Ph.D. program focused on autonomous driving. While Level 2 (L2) autonomous driving functions have achieved significant maturity in simpler contexts like parking and highway driving, urban environments introduce complex interactions that require adaptive solutions. For safe and effective autonomous driving, it is essential to consider both the driver's awareness and the current driving context, particularly the concept of the "Driver in the Loop".
The objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate and comprehend driver behavior in various urban scenarios, utilizing this understanding to define the driver's situational awareness in a concrete and applicable manner.
What you can expect:
Conduct research on whole-body human factors that characterize driver behavior and awareness in urban settings for level 2 autonomous driving. Collaborate across disciplines including human factors, driver monitoring, body modeling, and machine learning. Employ a data-driven methodology, utilizing existing datasets and collecting new data through driving simulations or real-world test drives. Design and train deep neural networks for time series or video data, applying explainable AI (XAI) to interpret their outputs. Develop and refine algorithms for driver assessment and autonomous driving functionalities based on your findings. Prototype and validate your algorithms through simulations and integration into existing software and test vehicles. Contribute innovative ideas in a collaborative, supportive, and agile environment.What you should bring:
A master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, human factors, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning techniques and frameworks, particularly deep neural networks and (self-)supervised learning in computer vision. Knowledge in body and pose modeling, as well as activity recognition, is advantageous. Experience in software development using Python (knowledge of C++ and shell scripting is a plus), particularly in implementing algorithms and machine learning pipelines (data preparation, training/validation/testing). Proficiency in data collection and processing (e.g., camera, IMU), along with data analysis and visualization skills. Interest in agile methodologies, test-driven development, Linux, build tools, and CI systems. A proactive attitude, self-motivation, analytical and critical thinking skills, and a willingness to learn and explore new domains. Proficient in English, with basic knowledge of German being beneficial.What we offer:
