The BMW Group presents an engaging and diverse Ph.D. program focused on autonomous driving. While Level 2 (L2) autonomous driving functions have matured in simpler environments like parking and highway driving, urban scenarios introduce complex interactions with the surroundings. For safe and effective autonomous driving, these functions must adapt to both the driver's awareness and the current context, reflecting the concept of the "Driver in the Loop".
The objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze and comprehend driver behavior in various urban situations, utilizing this understanding to define the driver's awareness of the current context.
What you can expect:
Research on whole-body human factors that characterize driver behavior and awareness in urban environments for Level 2 autonomous driving. Collaboration across disciplines including human factors, driver monitoring, body modeling, and machine learning. A data-driven approach, utilizing existing datasets and collecting new data through driving simulations or test drives. Design and training of deep neural networks for time series or video data, employing explainable AI (XAI) to interpret their decisions. Development and enhancement of algorithms for driver assessment and autonomous driving functions based on your findings. Prototyping and validating algorithms through simulations and integration into existing software and test vehicles. Contribution of innovative ideas in a collaborative, supportive, and agile environment.What you should bring:
A master's degree in computer science, electrical engineering, applied mathematics, statistics, human factors, or a related field. Familiarity with machine learning techniques and frameworks, particularly deep neural networks and (self-)supervised learning in computer vision. Knowledge in body and pose modeling, as well as activity recognition, is advantageous. Experience in software development using Python (knowledge of C++ and shell scripting is a plus), including the implementation of algorithms and machine learning pipelines (data preparation, training/validation/testing). Skills in data collection and processing (e.g., camera, IMU), data analysis, and visualization. Interest in agile methodologies, test-driven development, Linux, build tools, and CI systems. Proactive attitude, self-motivation, analytical and critical thinking skills, and a willingness to learn and explore new domains. Proficiency in English; basic knowledge of German is a plus.What we offer:
