Careers that Transform Lives

In this position, you will collaborate with a premier team of mechanical, electrical, and software engineers dedicated to the ongoing development and enhancement of the globally recognized Robotic Assisted Surgery platform within the Surgical Operating unit.

Medtronic's Surgical Operating Unit represents a powerful new division that unites the expertise and product offerings of Surgical Robotics and Surgical Innovations. Guided by the Medtronic Mission, we aim to build upon our legacy of reliable surgical solutions while advancing the potential of robotics and digital technologies for the benefit of our customers and the patients we serve.

Make a significant impact by exploring a career with the world's leading Medical Device company.

A Day in The Life

As a Principal Controls Software Engineer at Medtronic, you will provide technical guidance in the creation of software that supports both legacy and next-generation robotic surgical instruments. You will lead teams in developing software solutions that operate on a sophisticated real-time embedded platform, utilizing embedded sensors and actuators to deliver high-bandwidth, precise, and reliable instrument responses. This role will also involve collaboration with the electromechanical design of surgical instruments throughout all phases, focusing on control software requirements that align with the testing, verification, and validation of safety-critical systems.

Key Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading multiple scrum teams as the Software Technical Lead to facilitate the development of surgical robotic instrument projects.
  • Overseeing the design of feedback control algorithms in MATLAB/Simulink, employing classical PID control laws or advanced control methodologies, and updating existing software implementations to support released products.
  • Contributing to the continuous enhancement of verification techniques.
  • Collaborating with the broader software organization, systems engineering, and validation teams to define and review software requirements.
  • Acting as an independent reviewer of MATLAB/Simulink models to ensure compliance with quality standards and adherence to proper architecture.
  • Preparing for and participating in design reviews.
  • Documenting or contributing to the documentation of software, including architecture and design details, unit testing, anomaly tracking, and reporting.

Must Have: Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree with 7 years of relevant experience, or an advanced degree with 5 years of relevant experience.

Nice to Have

  • Proficiency in modeling and simulation software (MATLAB/Simulink strongly preferred).
  • Familiarity with multi-body kinematics and dynamics.
  • Experience in designing and implementing position, velocity, and torque feedback controllers.
  • Knowledge of discrete signal processing methods and algorithms.
  • Experience with reduced-order modeling of mechatronic systems.
  • Understanding of techniques for real-time estimation of uncertain parameters.
  • Experience in implementing advanced control algorithms, such as optimization-based control methods.
  • Familiarity with real-time software on microprocessor-based systems and software development in a Linux environment.
  • Integrating mechanical and electrical hardware with software.
  • Familiarity with software requirement creation, FMEA analysis, and verification processes.
  • Experience in medical product development processes, including regulatory considerations and safety aspects, with hands-on experience in medical/surgical devices.
  • Background in large organizations with matrix structures, having worked with cross-functional teams in an international context.
  • Fluency in English is required (German is a plus).
  • Experience in prototype-level C++ coding is advantageous.
  • Experience in open-ended robotics research projects is beneficial.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.
