Bachelor-/ Master Thesis: Modeling of Heating Processes for Recyclable Sandwich Panels

At the Fraunhofer IPT in Aachen, we are working on making the production of the future more digital, flexible, and sustainable. In the group "Laser System and Heating Technology," we design and construct prototype machines for laser-based and laser-assisted processes.
Within the scope of your thesis, you will develop laser-assisted heating processes for recyclable mono-material sandwich panels (MMSP). A numerical model will be developed to describe the transient temperature change along the thickness direction of MMSP during the heating process, in which both laser and IR radiation are used to heat the surface layers and foam core of MMSP to different temperatures. This increases the formability of the MMSP without causing the foam structure in the core to collapse. The model is experimentally validated by a real heating process of MMSP with temperature measurement at several locations.
Responsibilities- Determination of boundary conditions for the heating of MMSP
- Establishing a process model for the heating processes
- Experimental model validation
- Model-based parameter study
- You are studying mechanical engineering, computer science, CES, or a comparable subject
- Basic knowledge and experience in modeling heat- and mass transfer problems are advantageous
- First experiences in MATLAB or Python (NumPy, SciPy) are required
- A high degree of initiative, independence, and motivation
- Good language skills in English
