Clinical Dietitian Internship Program

OBJECTIVE AND OVERVIEW: The student intern plays a vital role in supporting the mission, vision, core values, and customer service philosophy of Fresenius Medical Care. This position adheres to the FMCNA Compliance Program, ensuring all regulatory and policy requirements are met. The intern collaborates with the dialysis healthcare team to deliver medical nutrition therapy for patients, working under the direct supervision of a registered dietitian in alignment with FMCNA policies, procedures, and training, while complying with state and federal regulations. RESPONSIBILITIES: As a Dietetic Intern, the individual must be currently enrolled in an accredited Dietetic Internship or a university-based Coordinated Program in Dietetics recognized by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). Under the guidance of the Renal Dietitian, the intern will:
- Review essential Renal Nutrition principles and other relevant components of the Orientation and Training requirements for staff dietitians.
- Understand the typical workflow and responsibilities of the Renal Dietitian.
- Conduct nutritional assessments through patient interviews.
- Calculate dietary prescription recommendations.
- Provide nutritional counseling to patients and their designated caregivers regarding prescribed renal diets.
- Gather data for initial, 90-day, semi-annual (if applicable), and annual Comprehensive Interdisciplinary Assessments.
- Assist the registered dietitian in the formulation and execution of nutrition care plans.
- Review monthly nutritional data with patients and/or their caregivers.
- Practice drafting monthly nutrition progress notes.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of nutrition care plans.
- Create nutrition-related projects for patients or staff, such as educational materials and activities.
- Attend Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement meetings and other interdisciplinary team discussions with the registered dietitian, participating as appropriate.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND REQUIREMENTS: The physical demands and characteristics of the work environment are representative of those encountered while performing essential job functions. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities. Daily responsibilities include desk work, computer usage, and patient interaction. The role requires travel between assigned facilities and various community locations. Attendance at regional, Business Unit, and Corporate meetings may also be necessary. The work environment resembles that of a healthcare facility, featuring controlled air temperature and moderate noise levels, with potential exposure to infectious materials. EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND: A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nutrition or Dietetics, or current enrollment in an accredited Coordinated Program in Dietetics is required. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE: Exceptional customer service skills are preferred, along with a commitment to delivering high-quality care to patients and aligning with Fresenius' mission and values. PROFESSIONAL RELATIONSHIPS: The intern must not work under the supervision of a family member or care for a family member who is a patient. If a family member is a patient at the facility, the intern will be scheduled to work on days when the patient is not present or assigned to another patient. SUPERVISION: The Clinical Manager assigns and closely oversees all Dietetic Intern responsibilities, with direct supervision from a Registered Dietitian based on the established educational plan. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: Additional duties may be assigned as necessary.
