We are in search of an energetic leader to oversee a research division focused on artificial intelligence (AI) security and safety at our Darmstadt headquarters. This position offers the unique opportunity to influence and direct the research initiatives of both the institute and ATHENE in this critical area, as well as to establish and manage a research team. Furthermore, there may be opportunities to engage in teaching programs at the partner universities of the institute.
The strategic direction and focus of the department will be under the leadership's purview. The institute boasts a significant specialized AI cluster, with machine learning methodologies already being applied across various scientific disciplines, including software and network security, forensics, and misinformation detection. The department aims to enhance existing efforts and investigate topics related to the security and reliability of AI and machine learning.
Responsibilities of the RoleYour Key Responsibilities- Lead a department dedicated to AI security at the Fraunhofer Institute for Secure Information Technology in Darmstadt
- Contribute to the strategic development of the institute, particularly in the department's area of focus
- Manage a scientific team, including the development of personnel
- Independently secure external funding
- Design, implement, and supervise research projects
- Collaborate closely with other departments within the institute and external partners across business, government, society, and academic and industrial research and development
- Ensure adherence to quality standards, budgets, and timelines in all departmental projects
- Ph.D. in a relevant discipline, such as Computer Science, Mathematics, or Electrical Engineering
- Extensive research experience in AI security
- Excellent communication and presentation skills in both English and German
- Experience in securing and managing scientific projects, mentoring emerging researchers, and general personnel management is advantageous
