Background
The refrigeration and air conditioning industry currently accounts for 20% of global energy consumption and contributes to 7.8% of global carbon emissions. This is a significant concern, especially with rapid urbanization. Developing efficient and decarbonized refrigeration technologies is crucial for achieving carbon neutrality goals.
Elastocaloric Cooling Technology
Elastocaloric cooling employs solid refrigerants, such as shape memory alloys (SMAs) and polymers, which exhibit self-heating and -cooling in response to mechanical stress. This technology eliminates the risk of hazardous refrigerant leakage and offers an eco-friendly, energy-efficient cooling solution. Regenerative elastocaloric cooling, utilizing active heat-transfer fluid periods, shows potential for delivering enhanced cooling power towards future commercialization.
Project Objectives
- Investigate the mechanical properties of SMAs and develop phenomenological models.
- Improve the 1D numerical model for porous elastocaloric regenerators based on existing AER model codes.
- Optimize the AER operating parameters and evaluate its cooling performance.
- Compare the results to the proof-of-concept of AERs.
Requirements and Qualifications
To carry out this work, the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie has extensive state-of-the-art equipment, including a 600 m2 clean room, rapid prototyping processes, and various metrological laboratories. Intensive support ensures that the work can be carried out within the given time frame.
