Job Description

As part of our research team at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie, we are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to work on a Master Thesis project focused on numerical modelling of high-efficient regenerative elastocaloric cooling based on superelastic shape memory alloys.

Project Overview

The project aims to develop and optimize a numerical model for regenerative elastocaloric cooling systems, utilizing shape memory alloys as solid refrigerants. This technology has the potential to provide an eco-friendly and energy-efficient cooling solution, eliminating the risk of hazardous refrigerant leakage. The successful candidate will investigate the mechanical properties of shape memory alloys, improve the existing numerical model, and optimize the operating parameters of the cooling system.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate the mechanical properties of shape memory alloys, including phenomenological models
  • Improve the 1D numerical model for porous elastocaloric regenerators based on existing AER model codes
  • Optimize the AER operating parameters and evaluate its cooling performance
  • Compare the results to proof-of-concept AERs
Requirements

We are looking for ambitious, creative, and self-motivated individuals with a strong background in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, physics, or related fields. The ideal candidate should have a good understanding of thermodynamics and programming skills in MATLAB.
