Molecular-beam epitaxy of innovative nitride heterostructures utilizing polarization manipulation
Wurtzite group III-nitride semiconductor heterostructures demonstrate significant spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization fields reaching several MV/cm along the polar c-axis. Engineering polarization within these heterostructures provides groundbreaking components for photonic and electronic applications.
In this initiative, the selected candidate will engage in the design and molecular beam epitaxy of polar group III-nitride heterostructures aimed at pioneering electronic devices leveraging polarization manipulation.
Particularly noteworthy in this context are N-polar GaN/AlN high-electron-mobility transistors on Si. These configurations present considerable benefits over traditional Ga-polar variants for high-power and high-frequency uses due to their scalability, reduced contact resistance, enhanced gate control of the 2D electron gases, lower substrate costs, and compatibility with existing Si CMOS technology.
Your Duties- Fabrication of nitride heterostructures via molecular beam epitaxy
- Characterization of samples through x-ray diffractometry, atomic force microscopy, and Hall-effect and C-V assessments
- Simulation of band diagrams using 1D Poisson-Schrödinger solvers
- Data interpretation and experimental planning
- Presentation of findings at conferences and in scholarly publications
- Master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, materials science, or a related discipline
- Preferably a background in device physics or nanotechnology
- Experience in device fabrication is beneficial
This role is available and is initially limited to a 3-year term with the possibility of a 1-year extension.
Compensation and benefits align with the German public service agreement (TVöD Bund) at a level of E13 (75%).

The Paul-Drude-Institute is part of the Forschungsverbund Berlin e.V. and a member of the Leibniz Association. The institute conducts fundamental and applied research at the intersection of materials science, condensed matter physics, and device engineering.
Within the Epitaxy department at PDI, a dedicated team of scientists, technicians, postdocs, and students operates 13 MBE systems for synthesizing a diverse array of material systems, including arsenides, nitrides, oxides, and 2D materials.
