Research Project Overview

The blood-brain barrier (BBB) plays a crucial role in maintaining brain stability, yet it can also impede the delivery of therapeutic agents to areas affected by neurological disorders. This project aims to investigate and manipulate the cellular mechanisms that regulate blood-brain barrier functionality in brain tumors, specifically gliomas. This research could enhance the delivery of treatments to gliomas. We have established several transgenic mouse models that reveal the cellular makeup, signaling pathways, and operational characteristics of the BBB in both healthy and diseased states. Our in vivo models for BBB lineage tracing, lineage ablation, and our comprehensive scRNAseq datasets from these models provide a robust foundation for the current research initiative. Our recent publications in prestigious journals highlight our commitment and capability for significant contributions to the fields of neuroscience and vascular biology.

Responsibilities

We seek an individual eager to intellectually contribute to the project, utilize transgenic mouse models for neuroscience, and investigate brain physiology/pathology through techniques such as (confocal) microscopy, flow cytometry, and (single-cell and spatial) transcriptomics. Additionally, the candidate will develop strategies for pharmacological modulation of the blood-brain barrier.

Qualifications

A degree in biology or biochemistry or a related field is required. Previous experience in vascular research or neuroscience is advantageous. Candidates should possess a collaborative spirit, the ability to work independently, and excellent English communication skills. Our Offer

The PhD position will be supervised by Prof. Rainer Glass, specializing in Neurosurgical Research at LMU Klinikum. A funded PhD project is available, with remuneration based on the Collective Agreement for the Public Sector of the Länder (TV-L), including standard public sector allowances.
