Research Associate (Doctoral Researcher/PhD)

This position is available for a duration of 3 years, contingent upon the absence of prior qualification periods. The role is part-time (65% of standard working hours) with compensation and benefits aligned with public service positions in the State of Hesse, Germany (TV-H E13, 65%).

The Research Training Group "Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes" (GRK 2937), supported by the German Research Foundation (DFG), explores the biology of nucleotides and their derived cofactors in various microbial species to uncover the mechanistic principles underlying nucleotide-dependent biological processes.

As part of this collaborative effort, the research group focuses on the cell biology of bacterial model systems, emphasizing chromosome segregation, cell division, cytoskeletal dynamics, and cell cycle regulation. The project titled "Nucleotide-regulated dynamics of DNA partitioning CTPases" investigates the molecular mechanisms of bacterial chromosome and plasmid segregation via the ParAB_S_ system, a conserved functional module responsible for distributing newly replicated DNA to daughter cells during bacterial cell division. This project will employ a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach encompassing molecular biology, fluorescence imaging, biochemistry, biophysics, structural biology, and bioinformatics. The findings are expected to elucidate fundamental principles in bacterial cell organization, potentially paving the way for future synthetic biological applications or the development of novel antimicrobials.

The position is limited to a timeframe deemed appropriate for the completion of a doctoral degree. The assigned duties will provide ample opportunities for conducting independent scientific research necessary for obtaining a doctorate. This limitation adheres to § 2, 1 WissZeitVG.

  • A scientific degree (Master or equivalent) from a university or a comparable higher education institution in the field of biology or biochemistry
  • A solid foundation in molecular (micro)biology
  • Experience in sterile handling and, ideally, genetic manipulation of bacteria
  • Expertise in molecular biological (cloning) and biochemical (protein purification) techniques
  • Interest in cell biological methodologies, including advanced fluorescence imaging techniques
  • Independent thinking, self-motivation, and a passion for scientific inquiry

Candidates are expected to demonstrate motivation for advancing their scientific qualifications, such as undertaking a doctoral project at the intersection of microbiology, biochemistry, and cell biology.

This project presents an engaging and timely topic within a supportive and international team. Successful applicants will be fully integrated into the graduate program of the Research Training Group "Nucleotide Metabolism in Microbes," which offers comprehensive scientific and transferable skills training. Additionally, applicants may participate in the graduate training programs of the International Max Planck Research School "IMPRS-μLife" and the Center for Synthetic Microbiology (SYNMIKRO).
