Master's Student for Robust Performance Modeling of Paired Satellites in the Next Generation Gravity Mission

Are you pursuing a Master's thesis and interested in satellite technology? This role focuses on the Next Generation Gravity Mission (NGGM) and the innovative satellites operating in formation, emphasizing robust performance modeling.

Location: Friedrichshafen/Immenstaad

Duration: 6 months

Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites provide significant advantages due to their proximity to Earth, playing a vital role in Earth observation and scientific research. The NGGM aims to enhance our understanding of the Earth's gravity field through advanced gravity gradient measurements. This mission involves two identical satellites flying in close proximity (~200 km apart) to measure range variations with exceptional precision, alongside the non-gravitational forces acting upon them. The control system must manage not only the traditional AOCS but also drag compensation and formation flying, presenting unique challenges for modeling and analysis.

Modern robust control methodologies can effectively tackle these challenges. This thesis will concentrate on identifying key performance factors to enhance system performance analysis, complementing traditional high-fidelity Monte-Carlo simulations. The goal is to develop a robust model of the entire system, incorporating an adequate linear analytical model of both satellites and their operational environment, including parametric uncertainties. This deterministic model will be derived from the linearization of non-linear dynamics equations, combined with a thorough understanding of the physical processes and quantification of uncertainties. The resulting model will balance complexity to facilitate stability and performance assessment while avoiding numerical challenges.

  • Familiarize with Linear Fractional Transformation (LFT) models and probabilistic uncertainties.
  • Develop and implement an LFT model for the NGGM.
  • Utilize the LFT model for robustness and sensitivity analysis.
  • Document findings and methodologies.
Qualifications:
  • Currently enrolled as a full-time Master's student in Aerospace Engineering or a related field.
  • Technical Skills:
    • Proficient in MATLAB/Simulink
    • Strong understanding of dynamics and robust control
    • Familiarity with rendezvous applications is a plus
  • Language Proficiency:
    • Fluent in English
    • Knowledge of German is advantageous
