Position: Translational Science Lead (all genders)
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The Translational Science Lead (TSL) plays a pivotal role in advancing our oncology initiatives. This position is instrumental in driving the successful development of global programs and expanding our pipeline, overseeing processes from initial target evaluation to lifecycle management. The TSL is responsible for establishing the vision and strategic direction of assigned projects, ensuring the implementation of cutting-edge precision medicine, which encompasses patient segmentation and proof of mechanism for product differentiation from pre-development through to registration, including strategies for companion diagnostics where applicable.
The TSL formulates a comprehensive translational strategy and is accountable for its effective execution across all development programs on behalf of Translational Sciences Oncology (TSO), providing leadership in translational science for one or more global development initiatives with full decision-making authority within their area of influence.
Main Responsibilities Include:
Overseeing the integrated translational sciences strategy presented to the Integrated Project Team (IPT), strategically guiding global translational science activities by offering relevant expertise and leadership in precision medicine, both professionally and scientifically. The TSL ensures high-quality and timely delivery of translational science outputs to create sustained value for patients and the organization, maintaining a comprehensive translational vision and strategy for the respective assets. Developing translational strategies from preclinical phases, facilitating the introduction of new agents into clinical settings, starting with target validation/pre-development. This includes providing critical input and ongoing support for preclinical projects with translational science expertise, such as designing companion diagnostics that meet various health authority requirements. Ensuring an innovative and advanced global translational science portfolio, from early to late development and lifecycle management, by crafting a patient-centric vision and establishing strategic partnerships with technology providers and key opinion leaders. The TSL may participate in joint coordination committees, steering committees, or advisory boards to maximize the value of Bayer's oncology portfolio. Accountable for the timely achievement of translational science milestones, addressing obstacles proactively and empowered to make decisions that effectively implement the translational strategy. Guiding and significantly contributing to the preclinical assessment and validation of new oncology assets in alignment with the overarching RED ONC strategy, focusing on value, differentiation, and addressing unmet medical needs. In alignment with the broader oncology strategy and Precision Medicine community, identifying new collaboration opportunities and fostering strong relationships with both new and existing partners, both within and outside of Bayer, to promote excellence in translational science. Leading and driving TSO-initiated cross-functional strategic initiatives that support the overall TSO, RED-ONC, Oncology, and Bayer strategies; capable of representing TSO in other cross-functional activities and workstreams as necessary. Independently leading self-empowered matrix teams in accordance with Bayer's leadership standards, fostering a high-performance environment that prioritizes psychological safety. The TSL is accountable for team outcomes and encourages a collaborative culture between clinicians and scientists that promotes creativity and innovation. Taking ownership of the entire TSO team, nurturing a culture of accountability in support of the strategy and in alignment with Bayer's values; empowering team members and promoting peer accountability across deliverables. Enhancing TSO's unique value contribution and driving the development of a motivated and fulfilled workforce by embracing a culture of creativity and innovation, while ensuring that capabilities are continuously evolving.QUALIFICATIONS
MD and/or PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related field. Extensive industry experience in biomarkers and precision medicine, with a proven track record of successful leadership in this domain. Demonstrated scientific excellence, evidenced by a history of relevant basic and/or translational research published in peer-reviewed journals. Outstanding expertise in drug development, with a demonstrated ability to integrate innovation to advance Precision Medicine in Oncology, along with a robust network of key opinion leaders and relevant external organizations. Strong understanding of regulatory review processes and interactions with global health authorities for both drug and device divisions, along with knowledge of the scientific, commercial, ethical, and legal aspects of the field. Ability to prioritize effectively, capitalize on strategic opportunities, and maintain high standards. Exceptional communication and leadership skills, combined with strategic thinking and insight into business and external trends. Results-oriented, with a focus on defining and delivering impactful outcomes across pipeline, team, talent, and organizational levels. Adaptable and quick to learn, working in iterative cycles and applying insights rapidly to foster continuous development. Customer-focused, remaining close to client needs and proactively conceptualizing and co-creating solutions.
