Neutron Spectrometer Instrument Scientist

Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is seeking a dedicated and innovative Instrument Scientist to enhance our research capabilities in neutron scattering. As part of the Helmholtz Association, we are committed to addressing significant societal challenges through advanced scientific research.
About Us:
Our Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) operates a range of cutting-edge neutron scattering instruments at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ). We provide invaluable access to these instruments for researchers globally, facilitating over 1,000 experiments annually across various scientific disciplines.
Your Responsibilities:
As an Instrument Scientist, your role will include:
- Assisting in the commissioning of the PANDA neutron spectrometer, including the integration of advanced options such as the ADR cryostat and BAMBUS multiplexing secondary spectrometer.
- Providing expert local contact support for users of the PANDA instrument.
- Contributing to the ongoing development of the PANDA instrument to address future experimental needs.
- Establishing your own research agenda within the framework of JCNS, leveraging a diverse array of complementary methodologies.
- Publishing and presenting high-impact research findings at conferences and in scientific journals.
- Actively promoting the use of the MLZ facilities to expand our user community.
Your Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Master's degree followed by a PhD in Physics, Magnetism, Quantum Phenomena, or a related field.
- Experience in neutron scattering techniques applied to condensed matter systems.
- A strong background in the development and application of neutron instrumentation.
- A proven record in inelastic neutron scattering research.
- Experience in mentoring and teaching.
- Familiarity with securing third-party funding.
- Excellent communication skills, with proficiency in English and a willingness to learn German to a B2 level.
- Strong initiative, creativity, and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the PANDA team.
- Willingness to participate in on-call duties during user operation periods.
