Our Jülich Centre for Neutron Science (JCNS) operates a range of advanced neutron scattering instruments at the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Zentrum (MLZ), facilitating research for scientists globally. Each year, over 1,000 researchers utilize our facilities to conduct experiments across various scientific disciplines, including physical, chemical, biological, and materials sciences.

We are currently seeking a dedicated Instrument Scientist / Postdoc for Neutron Spectrometer PANDA.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist in the commissioning of the PANDA neutron spectrometer, including the integration of advanced options such as the ADR cryostat and BAMBUS multiplexing secondary spectrometer.
  • Provide expert local contact support for users of the PANDA spectrometer at MLZ.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development of the PANDA instrument to address future experimental needs.
  • Establish and pursue an independent scientific research agenda within the framework of JCNS institutes, utilizing a variety of complementary methodologies.
  • Engage in high-impact research dissemination through publications and presentations at conferences.
  • Actively promote and expand the user base at MLZ.

Candidate Profile:

The ideal candidate will possess a Master’s degree followed by a PhD in Physics, Magnetism, Quantum Phenomena, or a related field. Essential qualifications include:

  • Experience in neutron scattering techniques for analyzing structures and excitations in condensed matter systems.
  • Technical proficiency and interest in neutron instrumentation.
  • A strong background in inelastic neutron scattering research.
  • Experience in teaching and supervising at various academic levels.
  • Proven ability to secure third-party funding.
  • Effective communication skills for public engagement and popularizing neutron scattering methodologies.
  • Fluency in English, with a willingness to learn German to a B2 level.
  • Demonstrated initiative, creativity, strong interpersonal skills, and analytical capabilities.
  • Ability to work autonomously as well as collaboratively within the PANDA team.
  • Willingness to participate in on-call duties during user operation periods.
