The Max-Born Institute for Nonlinear Optics and Short Pulse Spectroscopy (MBI) is at the forefront of research in nonlinear optics and ultrafast dynamics, focusing on the interaction of light with matter. The institute employs advanced ultrafast and ultra-intense laser technologies, exploring applications that stem from this innovative research.
Position Overview:
The MBI is seeking a motivated Masters student (m/f/d) to engage in research on ultrafast electron diffraction imaging of photochemical reactions. Light triggers a variety of chemical processes, some of which are beneficial, while others may pose risks, such as mutations leading to cancer. Understanding the mechanisms behind these reactions remains a challenge.
Ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) is a powerful technique used to visualize the structural dynamics of photo-induced reactions in real-time, achieving remarkable spatial and temporal resolution. However, current UED setups often lack the temporal resolution needed to capture rapidly evolving processes. Our new 100-kHz UED system aims to overcome these limitations, enabling time-resolved measurements with unprecedented temporal resolution.
Candidate Requirements:
We are looking for a highly driven Master student (m/f/d) with a Bachelor’s degree in physics or a related discipline. A solid foundation in nonlinear optics and ultrafast laser physics is essential. Proficiency in English, both verbal and written, is required.
What We Offer:
The selected student will receive comprehensive training and will actively participate in operating the optical setup for generating electron and optical pump pulses. This role includes working with ultrahigh vacuum systems, RF electronics, and conducting time-resolved measurements of fast photochemical reactions. Additionally, the student will learn to analyze transient electron diffraction patterns to extract structural information from photoexcited samples.
We regularly offer Master projects that involve close collaboration with PhD candidates and experienced researchers. Official supervision will be provided by Dr. Kasra Amini at MBI, in partnership with the physics department of Freie Universität Berlin. The position remains open until filled.
